Making a Difference, One Child at a Time

Why Your Team Should Volunteer This School Year

At Bonvenu Bank, community service isn’t just something that looks good on paper. It’s part of who they are. During the 2024-2025 school year, their team partnered with Volunteers of America North Louisiana (VOANLA) to tutor local students, and the impact went far beyond academics.

For Leslie Tuminello, it was a deeply personal calling.

“I personally wanted to make a difference in a child’s life by helping them improve academically. Especially those students who may need extra support,” she said.
The reward? Seeing a child’s eyes light up when a new concept clicks.
“Watching a child understand something with a big smile on their face is such a rewarding feeling,” Leslie shared. “Also, the kids gave great hugs.”

For John Evans, inspiration came through another volunteer’s story.

“I heard a spill by a very successful businessman about this program specifically and how much it touched him, so I gave it a try,” he recalled.
Those first visits quickly turned into cherished memories: big hugs from returning students, shared laughter during the school’s Mardi Gras parade, and a sense of camaraderie with his co-workers.
“Getting to know the children, teachers, coordinators, and Dr. Mouton has reminded me how important our community is and that I should be more aggressive encouraging others to volunteer,” John said.

For Crystal Ross, it was about more than tutoring, it was about breaking barriers and building trust.

“Growing up, I saw how much of a difference a single mentor or teacher could make—not just academically, but emotionally and socially. I wanted to be that person for someone else,” she explained.
She remembers the moment a student hugged her before heading back to class.
“That simple gesture spoke volumes. It wasn’t just about academics anymore—it was about trust, comfort, and caring.”

Bonvenu Bank believes giving back is part of their mission.

“At Bonvenu, giving back is woven into our culture,” Crystal said. “Volunteering is how we invest in our community and collaborate to make a meaningful impact. It’s also a chance to connect with coworkers beyond the usual workday.”

As the new school year begins, we encourage other companies, organizations, and community groups to follow Bonvenu Bank’s example. Volunteering with VOANLA not only changes the lives of students, but it changes the lives of those who serve.
