Leadership Spotlight: Pamela McKnight

When Pamela McKnight reflects on her early career aspirations, she smiles at how full circle her journey feels. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a lawyer. While her path ultimately took a different direction, it led her to a 20-year career in property management, experience that would later become the perfect foundation for her leadership at Volunteers of America North Louisiana (VOANLA).
Before joining VOANLA, Pam spent two decades working in property management and gained experience as a manager in the customer service field. Over time, she felt called to explore new opportunities. That moment of transition came when she submitted her résumé through Indeed, setting in motion her pivot into nonprofit work. What drew her in was simple but powerful: the chance to use her professional skills to make a deeper impact.
When Pam first arrived at VOANLA, she quickly realized that the scope and depth of the organization’s work in the community was far greater than she had imagined. The mission closely aligned with her core values, and she was especially struck by the hiring supervisor’s spunk and energy. Just as meaningful was the supportive culture she experienced in those early days, an environment that ultimately inspired her to stay and grow within the organization.
Now serving as Regional Director of Housing Services, Pam describes a “good day” as one that comes in many forms. Sometimes it means properties at full occupancy and operational goals successfully met. Other days involve navigating unexpected deadlines and ensuring every detail is handled with excellence. But her very best days come when residents reach important milestones, graduating from programs, securing employment, or achieving stable housing after hardship. Those moments serve as powerful reminders of why the work matters.
Personally, the role has taught Pam patience and perspective. It has deepened her understanding that strong leadership requires both decisiveness and empathy. Looking ahead, she is excited about the future. She hopes to see VOANLA’s housing programs continue to grow and evolve, expanding properties and raising the standard for affordable housing, providing not just shelter, but stability.
When asked how she hopes her leadership will be remembered, Pam’s answer is clear. She wants to be known as a fair leader who advocated for both her staff and the residents they serve, someone who upheld quality, protected dignity, and ensured every resident was treated with respect.
Through her steady leadership, Pam McKnight continues to strengthen VOANLA’s housing division, one community, one resident, and one milestone at a time.
