Donny Jackson’s path into leadership wasn’t something he mapped out early on, but instead it was something he grew into through experience, service, and a genuine passion for people. Originally, Donny envisioned a career centered around coaching or counseling, roles that reflect his natural inclination to guide, support, and uplift others. That foundation would later become a defining thread throughout his professional journey.
Before joining Volunteers of America North Louisiana (VOANLA), Donny built a strong base of experience that prepared him for leadership. His time in the Navy Reserve instilled discipline and perspective, while his work in human services gave him hands-on insight into the needs of individuals and communities. These experiences shaped both his leadership style and his commitment to service.
Donny’s journey with VOANLA began at the ground level. He started working as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), learning the work from the inside out. Over time, he advanced into Supported Independent Living (SIL), where he spent approximately two years deepening his expertise and supporting individuals in more independent settings. This progression, from part-time DSP to division leadership, gives Donny a unique and valuable perspective rooted in lived experience within the organization.
When he first came to VOANLA, Donny admits he didn’t fully understand the scope and scale of the organization’s work. What surprised him most in those early days was the depth and complexity of the programs, along with the level of dedication required to truly make an impact. What kept him motivated to stay and grow, however, was a combination of curiosity and a desire for personal and professional growth.
Stepping into the role of Vice President brought both excitement and challenges. Donny found the opportunity to advocate more broadly for individuals and programs incredibly energizing but also acknowledged the responsibility could feel overwhelming at times. He quickly realized the importance of strengthening his communication skills, particularly when working with the public and leading teams.
A key influence in shaping his leadership voice was mentorship. Donny credits a transparent and supportive mentor who believed in him early on, helping him build confidence and clarity in his role. That experience continues to inform how he leads today- with honesty, approachability, and a focus on developing others.
For Donny, a “good day” as VP is one where clients feel valued, staff feel supported, and programs are running effectively within budget. He takes pride in building strong teams and fostering a sense of camaraderie, emphasizing that collaboration and trust are essential to success.
The mission of VOANLA is deeply personal for Donny. He believes that every life matters and that finding common ground with clients is key to meaningful impact. One moment that stands out to him involved supporting a client in everyday tasks like yard work, something as simple as mowing the lawn or riding a bicycle. Through encouragement and shared interests, Donny saw firsthand how belief and support can empower individuals to achieve more than they thought possible.
This role has taught Donny the importance of patience, adaptability, and staying open to change. Looking ahead, he is excited about continued growth within the division, particularly in serving younger clients and expanding opportunities through innovations, especially in digital tools and systems.
Ultimately, Donny hopes his leadership will be remembered for one thing above all: making people feel important. Whether it’s clients, staff, or community members, his goal is to lead with care, consideration, and a lasting impact that reflects the heart of VOANLA’s mission.
