It was such a nice surprise when Carolyn Hammond, president and CEO, received a call from Michele Q=Petersen, current Board secretary, saying that her Shreveport Garden Study Club (SGSC) would like to make a generous $1,000 donation towards our veteran services.
The check presentation took place on a sunny, spring day at the Veterans Transitional Living Facility.
Michele and Susan Cage, chair for the SGSC December Project – Wreaths Across America – took a few minutes to share about the campaign, their involvement, and why this cause is near to their hearts. Cage said, “For each of the $15 wreaths sponsored in Shreveport, they [Wreaths Across America] returns $5 back to the community.”
Wreaths Across America dedicates one day to coordinate wreath-laying ceremonies across the country as a way to remember our fallen U.S. veterans, honors those who serve, and teach communities the value of freedom.
She continued, “The wreaths are all made in the United States. Afterwards, the Boy Scouts recycle the wreaths and use them in their bonfires. It’s a full-circle moment.”
There were 3,700 ceremonies last December, including ours. National Wreaths Across America Day ceremony led by the SGSC will take place December 16th, 2023 at the Greenwood Cemetery at 11 a.m.
