Find Your Home at The McAdoo

In the heart of downtown Shreveport stands a building with a remarkable story. Originally constructed as a hotel in 1920, The McAdoo has spent more than 100 years serving the community. Today, Volunteers of America North Louisiana continues that legacy by providing affordable housing and safe environment that help individuals build stability, independence, and hope for the future.

The McAdoo’s transformation began in the 1980s when a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) converted the historic property into single-room occupancy housing for individuals experiencing homelessness. Around the same time, Volunteers of America North Louisiana partnered with the state Department of Mental Health to provide supportive services designed to help residents thrive.

Following Hurricane Katrina, tax incentives helped fund a major redevelopment project that modernized all 45 residential units, offices, and common areas while preserving the building’s historic character. Today, The McAdoo continues to evolve. A $380,000 grant received in 2020 funded additional improvements, including bathroom renovations, enhanced security features, and solar panel installation to ensure the property remains a safe, comfortable, and sustainable place to live.

Now, The McAdoo has one-bedroom units available for rent.

Residents enjoy a variety of amenities designed to make daily life easier and more affordable, including utilities covered for water, sewer, and trash service, free Wi-Fi, free parking, on-site laundry facilities, secure mail services, and 24-hour staff availability. Community gathering spaces help foster connection among residents, while the downtown Shreveport location provides convenient access to local resources and services.

The McAdoo is more than housing. It’s a community built on dignity, support, and opportunity. Through a combination of affordable living and compassionate services, Volunteers of America North Louisiana helps residents take meaningful steps toward greater stability and self-sufficiency.

If you or someone you know is looking for affordable housing in a safe environment, now is the perfect time to learn more about available units at The McAdoo.
