Assertive Community Outreach (ACOS)/Behavioral Health

The ACOS/BH staff provide assistance for individuals with mental illness so they can live independently. Services include daily living skills, medication management, grocery shopping, budgeting, and transportation. This program is available in all eight parishes in Central Louisiana.  This program has been active through Volunteers of America for almost 20 years and has assisted hundreds of people in Central Louisiana that live with mental illness to live independent and happy lives.

Individuals who are not covered by Medicaid and are patients of Caring Choices-Central Louisiana Human Service District are eligible for the ACOS program.  Individuals that are covered through Medicaid and eligible for Magellan services are seen through the Behavioral Health program.

Homeless Outreach

The Homeless Outreach Program provides resources and information to the homeless. Items include things such as food, housing assistance, mental health referrals and more. The Homeless Outreach Program hosts the monthly H2O – Helping to Overcome Homelessness.  This service is available in Rapides, Concordia, Catahoula, LaSalle, Winn, Grant, Avoyelles and Vernon Parishes.

Supportive Housing

This program is designed to help homeless individuals with mental illness secure and maintain permanent housing by providing supports and assistance.  Staff provides transportation, training, and other supports for the duration of their time in the program. Clients are referred through other social service agencies, mental health facilities and inpatient mental health programs.  Participants live within the community in apartments and homes.  Services are available in Avoyelles, Catahoula, Concordia, LaSalle, & Rapides Parishes.

Transitional Housing

This program provides adults with mental illness a temporary place to stay while preparing for permanent housing. A total of seven adults can be housed at one time. While at the Transitional House, individuals are offered various services to gain confidence and skills to live independently. The average stay is 90 days. This service is offered in Rapides Parish.
